What is Behind the Wheel?

Shedule:

 

Day 1 of Range consists of the following:

  1. Completion of BTW Paperwork
  2. Forward/Backward Tracking
  3. Forward/Backward Tracking to Various Points on the Car
  4. Forward/Backward Tracking Around Objects
  5. Right/Left Turns
  6. Serpentine Driving

Range Day 2 Consists of the Following:

  1. Angle Parking
  2. Perpendicular Parking
  3. Parallel Parking
  4. Figure 8 
  5. T-Drill 
  6. X-Drill
  7. 3 Point Turns 

Road Days 3 - 6

Students taking behind the wheel at FPHS will begin road training after successful completion of the range.  Students will be trained in various skills progressing from simple and low risk to complex and higher risk. 

A sample road session would be as follows:

Day 3: Residential/City

Day 4: Hills, Curves, Intersections

Day 5: Open Road

Day 6: Interstate

 

Road Day 7 (Test)

The final day of a road session is the road test.  This is a comprehensive test where the instructor is not helping with any of the decision making process.  The instructor will give route directions but is not going to correct the driver.  The driver must demonstrate the ability to operate a car safely without help. 

Student drivers will be assessed in the following areas

Hand Position, Steering Technique, Proper Speed, Traffic Checks, Mirror Checks, Head Checks, Eye Checks, Lane Position, Lane Selection, Space Margins, Signaling, Obey Signs, Observes Right of Way, Proper Acceleration, Appropriate Braking, Smooth Stopping, Pre-Driving Procedures, Securing the Vehicle, Parking

 

Student drivers will automatically fail a road test for any of the following:

Not Wearing a Seat Belt, Speeding (+5), Strikes an Object, Drives in Oncoming Lane, Disobeys a Regulatory Sign or Signal, Dangerous Maneuvers, Failure to Yield to a School Bus or Emergency Vehicle, Turning from an Improper Lane, Instructor Intervention, Other Violations of the Law
