Forest Park offers 18 sports and field more than 40 teams which are supported by more than 75 coaches.
Athletic Affiliations
Forest Park is a member of the Cardinal District Conference, Region 6B, and Virginia High School League (VHSL).
Team Levels
There are as many as three levels of teams at Forest Park: Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Freshmen.
Varsity: Forest Park is dedicated to fielding varsity teams that are competitive at the conference, regional, and state levels. These teams and student athletes are provided the opportunity to compete for various championships and play in multiple contests. The focus on winning is stronger at this level, but on-field success will always be balanced by sportsmanship, fair play, and Forest Park High School expectations both on the playing surface and in the classroom. All programs have a varsity team.
JV and Freshmen: JV and freshmen teams provide an opportunity for interscholastic competition, continued participation by all, and the introduction to the overall program’s strategies and expectations. Team and individual skills are focused on to prepare the student athlete to become a potential member of the Varsity program. Coaches are encouraged to provide game experience for as many players as possible while still achieving team and program goals. Most programs will have a JV team with the exception of cross country, swimming, track and field, gymnastics, and golf. Football, volleyball, and basketball are the only programs that can have freshmen teams.
Team Selection and Participation
In athletics, students compete for limited playing/time slots, and try-outs will take place to select the best athletes to form the team(s). The selection process is the responsibility of the coaching staff. Tryout criteria will be sport-specific, depending on the skills that are needed to be competitive for each sport.
Criteria such as teacher recommendations, academic performance, and other personal attributes may
be a part of the tryout criteria.
Cuts
We expect that cuts will take place in many sports at various levels. We recognize that these decisions are difficult and we will handle them with care. Each student will be informed of their status and offered suggestions for improvement if they did not make a team.
